Hummingbird Care Services CEO Colby Bechtold recently joined the Growth Operator Podcast for an in-depth conversation about what it takes to build a home care company around quality, relationships, and a higher standard of care.
Based in Vero Beach, Florida, Hummingbird Care Services has continued to grow by taking an approach that looks beyond simply filling a schedule. Building Home Care Around the Individual

Rather than approaching every new client with the same template, Hummingbird Care Services takes time to understand the individual, their family, their routines, their personality, and the type of caregiver relationship that may work best.
Colby explained that successful home care requires looking at the entire person — physically, emotionally, socially, and personally.
That philosophy also influences caregiver matching. Finding the right caregiver is not simply a matter of determining who is available for a shift. Hummingbird considers personality, interests, communication styles, family dynamics, and other factors that can help create a more comfortable long-term relationship.
Choosing Quality Over Volume
The home care podcast conversation also explored Hummingbird’s approach to growth.
Colby shared that the company has intentionally focused on the quality of its care rather than trying to become the lowest-cost or highest-volume provider in the market.
That means setting realistic expectations, taking the time necessary to perform detailed assessments, and sometimes recognizing that the fastest solution is not necessarily the best solution.
Hummingbird’s philosophy is that families should understand what high-quality home care looks like regardless of which provider they ultimately choose. Education, communication, and transparency are therefore important parts of the company’s approach.
Technology Should Make Care Easier
Technology was another important part of the discussion.
For Hummingbird Care Services, technology should work quietly in support of seniors, caregivers, families, and care coordinators — not create another complicated system that someone has to manage.
Colby discussed evaluating technology from the perspective of the people actually using it. If a system creates unnecessary steps for an older adult or keeps care professionals behind a computer instead of interacting with clients, it may ultimately work against the purpose of better care.
That same philosophy can be seen throughout Hummingbird’s approach to proactive care: use better information to support human decision-making while keeping relationships at the center of the experience.
